System: The Bread Oven
Project: Caretaking (1st Generation)
Date: 2019 till 2020
In the first two years after building the oven from local resources together with artists Florian Lutz and Jakob Krinzinger, we took care both of the object and the programming around it. Doing so, we created various public baking events, inviting students and staff to bring their own dough to bake, hosted different workshops teaching others how to work with the oven, collaborated with other student initiatives and provided catering for celebrations happening on campus.
During those months, the oven was always able to maintain (temporal) forms of community, whilst we, despite several attempts, experienced challenges in creating a community that would maintain the object - given the fluctuating context of an art academy. Despite that, after our graduation from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the COVID-19 pandemic, a second generation of caretakers was taking stepping up in order to continue working with the oven and further inscribing it into the school’s social ecosystem.
